Filesystem Navigation and Management Lab

Overview

This lab is designed to teach participants how to navigate and manage the Linux filesystem effectively. Through hands-on exercises using commands like ls, cd, mkdir, and rm, learners will explore the Linux filesystem hierarchy, understand file and directory metadata like inodes, and practice creating, editing, and safely deleting files and directories.

Inside this lab

Participants will build foundational knowledge of filesystem navigation and management in Linux. Key concepts include understanding the Linux filesystem hierarchy (/home, /etc, /var, /tmp), exploring file metadata via inodes, creating structured directory hierarchies, managing files using commands like touch and echo, and practicing safe deletion of files and directories. The lab offers a practical approach to mastering Linux commands and techniques necessary for system administration and DevOps practices.

What you will learn:

  • Navigate the filesystem using both absolute and relative paths.
  • Explore the Linux filesystem hierarchy and its key directories.
  • Understand file metadata, including file permissions, ownership, and inode numbers.
  • Create, manage, and delete files and directories with essential Linux commands.
  • Use advanced listing options (ls -lh, ls -a, ls -R, etc.) to analyze directory contents.
  • Safely delete files and directories while verifying changes.
  • Complete a hands-on challenge to consolidate navigation and management skills.

With this lab, learners can confidently manage Linux filesystems, perform essential operations, and understand how directories and files are organized at a deeper technical level.
